Enhancing the Life of Your Senior Pet

senior-pets.jpg

When your dog or cat reaches the age of seven, the  veterinarians and staff at Pet Medical Center Sunland consider your animal to be a senior pet needing more observation and a bit more care. Older pets are prone to developing serious health problems such as diabetes, cancer, kidney and heart disease, and degenerative joint disease. Our professional staff recommends semiannual wellness examinations for your senior pet for early detection of potential health risks.

Your senior pet’s wellness visit includes physical, dental, arthritis, and rectal exams, blood and urine tests, fecal analysis, and a body condition score.

If your senior dog or cat displays any of the following signs, you should contact us immediately for an appointment:
  • Trouble eating

  • Bad breath

  • Drinking and urinating more

  • Vomiting

  • Weight loss

  • Depression

There are many things our staff can do to enhance your pet’s aging process:
  • Change your animal’s diet and give you nutritional support

  • Add joint and vitamin supplements

  • Pain management through anti-inflammatories, and light narcotics.

  • Provide immune support

  • Assess your pet’s dental disease

  • Clean your dog or cat’s teeth

As your pet reaches the end of its life, we strive to make your dog or cat’s final days comfortable and less stressful for you. When it is time to say goodbye, we perform private euthanasia where your family can be present if desired.  We also offer clay paw prints and cremation services.  If you prefer home euthanasia, we can refer you to a veterinarian who can assist you.

For the best possible care for your senior pet, be sure to contact the veterinarians and staff at Pet Medical Center Sunland today. And for additional information, view our video on geriatric wellness.
